Springwell Mablethorpe: Building, Baking, and Exploring Our Community!

It has been a brilliant week at Springwell Mablethorpe, with our students stepping out into the community, learning practical trade skills, and enjoying some fantastic hands-on activities.

Here is a look at what we have been up to recently:

🛒 Community Champions at Morrisons

  • Our students recently enjoyed a fantastic trip to our local Morrisons supermarket.

  • They participated in a special “Foodmaker and Shopkeeper Tour” organized by the Morrisons Community Champions.

  • We are incredibly proud of the group, with one student proudly showing off a wonderful certificate awarded to Springwell Academy to celebrate their successful visit, alongside a tasty pastry treat!

🛠️ Building for the Future

  • We have some budding builders in our midst! Students have been working incredibly hard outdoors, assisting with the construction of a large new wooden pergola for community use in Mablethorpe.

  • Kitted out safely in high-vis “VIY Volunteer” vests, safety goggles, dust masks, and gloves, they gained practical, hands-on experience using professional equipment.

  • They did a brilliant job focusing on the details, carefully using power sanders on the large wooden posts to ensure a smooth, safe finish for the structure.

🧁 Culinary Delights

  • Back inside, things got a little sweeter as students practiced their baking, mixing, and teamwork skills.

  • Gathered around a bright yellow table with staff, they worked on mixing up a delicious bowl of chocolate batter.

  • The final results were some fantastic-looking chocolate cupcakes in green cases, perfectly topped with mini marshmallows.

🐛 Close Encounters in Nature

  • Our students are always curious about the world around them, and an outdoor session led to a fascinating close encounter with some local wildlife.

  • A group of primary students and staff gathered around closely to safely examine a beautifully patterned, large green caterpillar resting on a leaf right in the palm of a hand.

A massive well done to all of our students for their engagement, teamwork, and brilliant attitudes across all these activities!

Our students have been working hard both inside and outside the classroom, and we are thrilled to share some of their latest achievements!

Here is a look at what our students have been up to recently:

🌳 Exploring Our Outdoor Spaces

Making the most of the beautiful weather, our students have been spending time in our fantastic outdoor environments.

  • One student was spotted using a tablet to practice their photography skills, capturing images of the large, leafy trees growing in our school grounds.

  • We also captured a lovely moment of a staff member walking through our outdoor area towards our sensory musical chimes, which are set up beautifully against the backdrop of the school field and fence.

⛑️ Important Life Skills and Wellbeing

Equipping our students with essential knowledge for their personal safety and wellbeing is always a top priority.

  • Mini Medics: We are incredibly proud of four of our students who recently completed their First Aid training and were awarded their official “Mini Medics” certificates.

  • KS4 Guest Speaker: Our KS4 students attended an impactful guest speaker session focused on navigating healthy relationships, as well as understanding domestic abuse and coercive control.

  • Support Networks: During the KS4 session, students also learned about vital support networks and tools available to them, including Childline, Kooth, and the Hollie Guard app.

🐞 Protecting Our Local Wildlife

Connecting with nature is always a highlight, and our P2 class took this to the next level with a fantastic environmental project!

  • Building Bug Hotels: The P2 class worked together as a team on to build a colourful “bug hotel”.

  • Upcycling: They upcycled materials by painting cardboard boxes and stacking cardboard tubes to create the perfect habitat for insects.

  • Learning About Ecosystems: As part of the project, students learned exactly why insects are so important to our ecosystem. They discovered that bugs can be “Super Pollinators” (like bees and butterflies that help plants grow fruit) and “Natural Protectors” (like ladybugs that eat harmful pests).

  • Outdoor Fun: The completed bug hotel was successfully set up outside, where one of our students posed enthusiastically in the sunshine by the garden fence.

📝 Classroom Creativity and Cross-Curricular Learning

Back in the classrooms, our students have been demonstrating excellent research skills and creativity.

  • Exploring Australia: One student,  did some brilliant cross-curricular work.

  • Literacy Focus: He practiced his literacy skills by writing words beginning with the letter ‘m’, including “minecraft,” “monkeys,” “melastoma,” and “money”.

  • Independent Research: He then researched the melastoma flower, which grows in Australia, and chose to draw a red kangaroo to complete his Australian-themed task.

A huge well done to all of our students for their hard work, empathy, and creativity this week!

Bringing Learning to Life

It has been an incredibly busy and productive time here at Springwell Mablethorpe! We are always striving to provide our young people with engaging, practical, and meaningful learning experiences. Looking back at our recent activities, we are exceptionally proud of the teamwork, focus, and resilience our students have demonstrated.

Here is a look at what we have been up to recently:

🎖️ Exploring Future Pathways with MPCT

We had the privilege of welcoming an ex-military instructor from the MPCT College in Lincoln for an inspiring careers talk. The session focused on the different college courses available and how a background or interest in the military can help shape future career paths.

  • Educational Preparation: Students learned about the academic steps and functional skills needed to pursue various pathways.

  • Physical & Military Training: The presentation highlighted the importance of physical fitness, teamwork, leadership, and the daily routines involved in military life.

  • Active Engagement: Our young people were incredibly attentive, listening carefully and thinking deeply about their post-16 opportunities.

🧰 Equipping Students with Essential Life Skills

At Springwell, we believe that education goes far beyond the standard curriculum. This week, primary students took part in highly practical and vital first aid and emergency response training.

  • The Recovery Position: Students worked closely together to practice placing each other safely into the recovery position during a simulated scenario.

  • AED Training: Under expert guidance, the class received a hands-on demonstration of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and learned the critical steps of responding to an emergency.

It is incredibly empowering for our students to learn these real-world, life-saving skills. Their maturity and sensible approach to these lessons were brilliant to see.

🤝 Collaboration and Hands-On Learning

Back in the classroom, the focus has been on collaborative learning and creative thinking. We know that our students learn best when they can get hands-on and work together.

  • Mind-Mapping: We saw some fantastic peer support as students collaborated on shared brainstorming exercises, mapping out concepts and connecting ideas together on paper.

  • Observation and Focus Tasks: Students gathered around a tray of varied objects, including Play-Doh, pencils, and small figures, for a focused observation and memory activity. Exercises like this are wonderful for building concentration, communication, and peer engagement in a supportive, shared setting.

We are incredibly proud of how our students have embraced these varied challenges. A huge thank you to the staff and external visitors who helped make these enriching experiences possible.

Bringing Learning to Life

It has been an incredibly busy and exciting time here at Springwell Mablethorpe! Across the school, our students have been diving into hands-on learning, developing essential life skills, and celebrating their hard-earned milestones. From the classroom to the great outdoors, there is always something amazing happening.

Here is a look at what our students have been up to recently:

🔬 Bringing Science to Life

We love finding creative ways to make science interactive and fun! Recently, our students have been getting completely hands-on with their STEM subjects:

  • Engineering Parachutes: Students were tasked with designing and testing their very own parachutes using everyday materials like plastic bags and string. The smiles say it all—there is nothing quite like the thrill of testing a design to see gravity and air resistance in action!

  • Modelling the Brain: To better understand human anatomy, our students rolled up their sleeves and used clay to sculpt detailed models of the human brain. By moulding the different lobes and structures themselves, they were able to clearly identify and learn about the brain’s key features. 

📖 Diving into Classic Literature

In English, our S4 students have been immersing themselves in J.B. Priestley’s classic play, An Inspector Calls.

  • Vocabulary and Stagecraft: The class has been working hard on expanding their vocabulary, learning the meanings of period-specific words like squiffy and adverbs like reproachfully. They have also been analysing stage design, labelling key elements of the set like the chandelier, fireplace, and dining table to understand how the setting contributes to the play’s dramatic atmosphere.

  • Popcorn Reading: To bring the script to life, the class has been participating in “popcorn reading” sessions. This is a great way to keep everyone engaged and confident reading aloud as they explore the twists and turns of the Birling family’s evening!

🌱 Green Fingers and Outdoor Learning

Taking learning outside the classroom is a big part of what we do. Our students have been enjoying the sunshine and getting their hands dirty in the school garden. Armed with watering cans and a lot of enthusiasm, they are learning valuable lessons about nature, responsibility, and the patience it takes to grow plants from scratch.

🤝 Thriving Together

Our “Thrive” sessions are all about building confidence, working with new people, and practicing clear communication.

  • Team Building through Origami: Students practiced following complex instructions and communicating clearly with their peers by folding amazing origami foxes! 

🏕️ Year 11 End of Year Trip

To celebrate the incredible hard work and dedication of our Year 11 students, we headed out for an epic End of Year Trip! It was an action-packed day full of adventure and team bonding. The students enjoyed:

  • Target Practice: Testing their precision and focus at the outdoor axe-throwing range.

  • Paintballing: Gearing up in masks and camouflage for some high-energy teamwork in the woods.

  • Campfire Classics: Winding down the exciting day by gathering around a crackling fire to roast marshmallows and make s’mores.

It was the perfect way to celebrate their journey and send them off with fantastic memories.
